About Mrs. Johnstone

I was born the sixth child born into a family of six, and was raised in a small farming community in rural Iowa. On our farm, we milked dairy cows and raised feeder pigs as well as chickens and had several pets. Our pets included cats, dogs, and horses.

As a youngster, I spent hours riding my horse and roaming through the woods, camping by the river where we would fish and swim.

In high school, I played the trumpet and baritone in concert and marching band, participated in Future Teachers of America, was the girl’s basketball manager, and was an all-conference pitcher my sophomore, junior, and senior years.

My senior year of High School, I took the Geriatric Aide course through the local Community College and began working part time as a nurse’s aide at a local nursing home. For the next several years, I worked at several level entry jobs including day cares, snack bars, and telephone answering services. I then came to the conclusion that these jobs were not fulfilling for me and decided to follow my dream of being a teacher. During this time period, I also married my husband and have now been married for 32 years.

I enrolled in the University of Northern Iowa where I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Reading Education in 1996. I then decided to take some graduate classes while searching for employment. I was then solicited to be the graduate assistant to the director of the Reading Clinic. This enabled me to complete my Masters Degree in Reading Education in 1999.

Upon completing my Masters, I was recruited by the Chaffey Joint Union High School District to teach Reading. I have held this position since 1999.
